mural near sokcho, south korea πŸ‡°πŸ‡·

I was introduced to the owner of Surf Ground (μ„œν”„κ·ΈλΌμš΄λ“œ), a surf school located at Songjiho Beach (μ†‘μ§€ν˜Έ ν•΄μˆ˜μš•μž₯), which is about an hour north of the city of Sokcho. Through a former colleague (thank you mk), I learned that they were looking for someone to paint a mural. I offered my services, as I had done in ipoh, Malaysia the month prior.

The lovely people at Surf Ground offered a place to sleep and free surf gear rental in exchange for my work. They had an idea of what they wanted painted on their wall β€” the name of the surf school and some surfers β€” and that's exactly what they got.

The main figure in the mural depicts a surfer nose riding, also known as "hanging ten”, where the surfer hangs all ten toes over the nose of their board. This is an accomplished manoeuvre in old-school longboard surfing. what i especially like about this move is the contrast between the difficulty of the manoeuvre and the relaxed nature of longboarding.

In the background, another figure is attempting to turn and is using their entire body to do so. Longboards are generally less manoeuvrable, so turning takes more effort. the surfers ride on a wave of psychedelic typography, with a golden sun shining in the background.
